The Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literature

The Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literature  was founded on the 1st of September 1948 within the framework of the Pedagogical Institute of Chisinau and is the first faculty of foreign languages from the republic.  September,1 1954 it was transferred to Balti Pedagogical Institute.

The second historic stage of the faculty begins in 1996 when at „Ion Creanga” State Pedagogical University restarts its activity the Faculty of Modern Languages, renamed later into Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literature.
Since then, the faculty has provided the training of more than 1500 graduates, who are successfully employed as teachers in pre-university and higher education institutions, clerks in educational and economic management, translators, international projects coordinators.

The Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literature is led by the Dean Gogu Tamara, Associate Professor, Doctor of Philology.

Professional training is based on two levels:

  • Level I – Bachelor
  • Level II – Master

Within Level I – Bachelor, the education is realized at:

  • single specialities – 180  credits, with a duration of 3 years:

English Language and Literature; German Language and Literature; French Language and Literature; Italian Language and Literature; Spanish Language and Literature;

  • specialities with double profile (basic speciality  (A) + secondary specialities (B) – 240 credits, with the duration of  4 years:

English Language and Literature and German Language; English Language and Literature and French Language; English Language and Literature and Italian Language; English Language and Literature and Spanish Language; German Language and Literature and English Language; German Language and Literature and French Language; French Language and Literature and English Language; French Language and Literature and Italian Language; French Language and Literature and German Language; French Language and Literature and Spanish Language.

The graduates of the faculty get the degree of Bachelor of Education Sciences, the fact that allows them to apply their knowledge in pre-university educational institutions as teachers of English/German/French/Spanish/Italian language and literature; methodologists; managers in the educational system; interpreters; reviewers etc.

Bachelor diploma holders can continue their education at Level II – Master: (English/German/French) Language and Culture; Research Methodology in English Language Didactics.

The graduates of level II have the possibility to continue their education at Doctorate level, speciality 13.00.02 Theory and Methodology of Education (English/German/Italian Language). At the moment, the faculty possesses a rich didactic-scientific potential; highly qualified academic staff including Doctors of Science and Doctors Habilitat, University Professors and Associate Professors from Moldova as well as from abroad (the USA, the UK, France, Germany, Italy etc.) are working there.

The primary aim of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literature is planning, directing and assessment of educational process in order to train highly qualified staff, competitive both in Moldova and abroad. This imperative is required by Bologna Process principles: the development of a competitive European higher education system, based on two levels accompanied by a system of comparable diplomas.
The most significant scientific activities can be considered the scientific teachers’ and students’ conferences organized within „Ion Creanga” State Pedagogical University and the further publication of the scientific materials in the Annals of „Ion Creanga” State Pedagogical University, Problems of Social-Humanitarian Sciences and of Education Modernisation.

The faculty collaborates with the US Embassy, Germany Embassy, French Alliance, University Agency of Francophony, Soros-Moldova Foundation ”Goethe” Institute, with DAAD academic exchange office from Bonn and with other international organizations.

With the support of US Embassy, the ETRC (English Teaching Resource Centre), is endowed with modern equipment and methodological literature for English language study.
